Sport-Specific Screening and Injury Prevention: Ready, Set, Go

The first step in athletic performance enhancement is don’t be hurt! It is imperative for athletes to be able to participate consistently in their expected practice and training regimens. However, some athletes start their season and/or training with an undetected biomechanical imbalance that could be predisposing them to both minor and serious injuries. Current “sports physicals” at the doctor’s office are not designed to detect these imbalances.

Physical therapists at Rebound Sports and Physical Therapy not only treat a wide variety of athletes on a daily basis, but they have developed sport-specific physical benchmarks that are critical to injury prevention and performance enhancement. Our collaboration with top-level coaches and a constant drive to uncover the root causes of injury, and keys to performance have led to some amazing breakthroughs in our ability to TEST for these things.

The Rebound staff has developed a world-class screening process to help identify the biomechanical imbalances before they create an injury situation. Our screening methods are tailored to the athlete and to the athlete’s particular sport. The results of our screening are shared with coaches, athletes, and parents so that a plan to address any identified deficits can be developed into an injury prevention or performance enhancement program. The program is designed such that entire teams can be evaluated or individual athletes. Physical therapists and athletic trainers are currently testing athletes and teams in the following sports.

  • Soccer
  • Gymnastics
  • Cross Country and Track
  • Swimming
  • Volleyball
  • Baseball
  • Golf
  • Dance
  • Figure Skating

Traditional Chinese Medicine/Acupuncture

Rebound is excited to have Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to offer to their patients. is a comprehensive natural health care system that has been used to diagnose, treat, and prevent illness for thousands of years in China and other Asian countries.  TMC is unique in that is uses a holistic approach when diagnosing and treating a person.  The patient is treated based on their physical, emotional, and spiritual make up.  TCM addresses not only the symptoms, but the root of the problem as well.  The basic theory of TCM involves the concept of Qi (pronounced chi).  Qi is the vital energy that flows throughout the body.  TCM recognizes other physiological functions as well, but it is the Qi that is the driving force behind all of our physiological processes.  It regulates the balance between the body, mind, and spirit.  If the Qi is disrupted or blocked form disease, injury, medication, or lifestyle factors such as overwork, stress, poor diet, or emotions, then the result is ill-health.  TCM strives to balance the body’s Qi to restore health.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles in different points of the body.  These points relate to meridians (the pathways of energy in the body).  Research has shown that acupuncture points are strategic conductors of electromagnetic signals along the meridians.  By stimulating acupuncture points, signals are relayed throughout the body which may regulate hormones, start the flow of pain-killing biochemicals, or trigger immune system cells to specific sites in the body.  Acupuncture is nearly pain free.  Unlike hypodermic needles, acupuncture needles are incredibly thin and flexible and so they allow for easy and almost pain free insertion.  Usually patients feel a warm or distending sensation as the needle is inserted.  Acupuncture is very safe when practice by a trained acupuncturist using sterile, disposable needles.  Acupuncture is very effective medicine on its own, but is even more effective when combines with Chinese Herbal treatment.  Acupuncture is also an excellent addition to conventional western medical treatment or treatment by a chiropractor, natropath, or osteopath.  It is important to inform all of your health care providers of any other treatments you may be seeking.

Rebound offers many services and options for Traditional Chinese Medicine/Acupuncture.  Please call the office for more information or to be contacted by our licensed acupuncturist.

Facial Rejuvination/Cosmetic Acupuncture

Cosmetic acupuncture uses tiny superficial needles to bring increased blood and qi to the face resulting in the production of collagen and elastin.  This procedure is safe and effective.  Unlike surgical or other “non invasive” treatments such as injectables, which can carry significant side effects, the cosmetic acupuncture system actually improves health while helping you look your best.

Reported Benefits of Cosmetic Acupuncture are:  Improvement of fine lines of face and a diminishing effect on deeper wrinkles, moisturized, softer skin and a more even skin tone, improved muscle tone and firmer jaw line, as well as a reduction in jowls, reduction in facial puffiness, reduction or elimination of rosacea and acne, increased vitality.

Heather Lahdenpera, LAc, MPT, MTOM, Dipl. Ac, CH, OM is trained through both the Mei Zin Cosmetic Acupuncture System and the Center for Rejuvenation Acupuncture.  Please call for a free consultation.
